If, without much argument, we can agree that the physical world we experience is entirely material, then it becomes clear how much transformation is still possible in the composition of the objects we interact with every day.
From the keyboard I am writing on to the screen you are reading this on (not to mention all of the intermediaries that make this possible), it is evident that the materials facilitating this are currently sub-optimal. Arguably, one could say that these were developed in an age without AI and therefore relied on the very astute, but sometimes limited, optimization instincts of human scientists and engineers.
Surely, with the current trajectory of robotics and AI, we will see a transformation of all the physical things we interact with. The promise of AI is that we can search a much broader space of possibilities in a disciplined, efficient, and near-optimal manner. Hence, for every material we encounter, we are bound to find near-optimal alternatives: more performant, more sustainable, and hopefully cheaper.
This signifies a disruption across industries, as well as a reconfiguration of the global, resource-intensive, extractivist economy our current markets rely on.
